"Special Olympics Florida Day" Proclaimed!

 

Florida Governor Rick Scott and the Florida Cabinet honored Florida's Special Olympics athletes with a resolution proclaiming March 9 as "Special Olympics Florida Day" in recognition of March being Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month.

The resolution was introduced by Attorney General Pam Bondi and was presented at the March 9 Cabinet meeting.

The ceremony included Special Olympics Florida President Monty Castevens, Leon County Special Olympics athletes, volunteers, and local and state law enforcement dignitaries (pictured above).

The proclamation and ceremony called upon Floridians to join in celebrating the day through volunteerism, support and greater understanding of people with developmental disabilities.

Special Olympics Florida President Monty Castevens said, "On behalf of the 15,000 athletes of Special Olympics Florida, we want to thank the Governor, Cabinet and Attorney General for recognizing the potential and possibilities of people with intellectual and developmental disabilities: that they can compete and succeed, and they can contribute to and be included in their communities. We invite all Floridians to celebrate Special Olympics Day throughout the year through direct involvement."
